Aruba became a member of FIDE in 2001. In the past Arubian players attended the Olympiads under the flag of the Netherlands Antilles. Aruba was part of the Antillean constellation until 1986. The federation with the partnership of Joop Van Oosteroom has hosted some interesting chess events like the 1991 match Lev Polugaevsky-Judith Polgar and Genna Sosonko-Sz.Polgar, the 1994 match Jeroen Piket- Lev Polugaevsky, the 1995 match Alexei Shirov- Jeroen Piket and the classical tournament in 1992 won by Lev Psakhis followed by the Tumba Tournament; a team tournament between Ladies and Veterans.
The national team has participated to 4 Olympiads since 2002. Its best achievement was 123rd in 2004.
Juste Lopez is the only titled player (CM) and the 2009 national champion.
In 2009 Aruba was ranked 128th among the countries (average 1976).
