The Modern Chess as we play today became popular only in the middle of the 50’s.AICF joint FIDE in 1956 and the only known player at the time was Manual Aaron, several times national champions and the only titled player. Since the last ten years with the professionalism of the AICF connected with the new status of Viswanatha Anand as a world class player, India became one of the leaders in Asia men competitions with great performance like sixth at the 2004 Olympiad, winner of the 2005 and 2009 Asian Team Championships and winner of the 2006 Asian Games Team Competition.
India has organized mostly all World Chess Championships, World Cup and Continental Championships. The prominent players are: Manuel Aaron, Viswanatha Anand, Krishna Sasikian, and Humpy Koneru a member of the prestigious lady’s club who holding an IGM title and 2600 elo.

Indian has participated in 18 Olympiads since 1956 (no participation in 1958 and from 1966 until 1978). Its best achievement was 6th in 2004.
