iran Chess game is an ancient tradition in Iran that goes right back almost to the time when the game was invented. Iran joint FIDE a bit before 1956 and the Chess Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1990. Iran has participated in 18 Olympiads since 1956 (except 1960, from 1978 until 1990 and in 1992) and collected 2 individual medals. Its best achievement was 28th in 1956.

The country has hosted the 2000 -2001 World Championship Final, the 1998 and 2008 Asian Individual Championships, the Asian Youth Championships in 1998, 2002 and 2004 and the 2005 Asian Team Championship. The Fajr chess festival is the most important event organized in the country.

In 2010, the country listed 6 IGMs (Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Elshan Moradiabadi, Morteza Mahjoob, Homayoon Toufighi, Amir Bagheri and Shojaat Ghane), 1 WGM (Atousa Pourkashiyan), 10 IMs and in total 61 titled players.
