The Japan Chess Association has been a member of FIDE since 1968. Much less popular than Go, Chess has never developed in Japan as it has in neighbouring countries like China or the Philippines.
Japan has participated in all the Olympiads since 1970 and its best achievement was 38th in 1976.
By 2011 Japan had one International Master and seventeen title players.
The first National championship was organised in 1969 and since 2000 the National Champions have been: Akira Watanabe, 2001 Akira Watanabe, 2002 Gentaro Gonda, 2003 Simon Bibby, 2004 Ryo Shiomi Kiyotaka Sakai, 2005 Kiyotaka Sakai, 2006 Shinya Kojima, 2007 Shinya Kojima and Masahiro Baba, 2009 Shinya Kojima and Shinsaku Uesugi, 2010 Sam Collins, 2011 Ryuji Nakamura .
