The Lieruvos Sachmatu Federacija became a member of FIDE in 1930.

The first local tournament was organised in 1920-21 but the first championship will take place only in 1921.

The national team has participated in 16 Olympiads in two periods (1930-39 and 1992-2010) and collected two medals for the best individual performances (Abramavicius and Luckis).
Its best achievement was seventh in 1933.

The best players born in Lithuania are Vladas Mikenas, Alexander Tolush, Ratmir Kholmov, Eduardas Rozenthalis and Victoria Cmilyte.

The last champions were: 1998 1-2.
