The Qatar Chess Association joined FIDE in 1985. Its President Khalifa Mohammed AL-HITMI, who served FIDE for more than 16 years as Asian Continental President and then FIDE Vice President, has organised within the Doha Asian Games, several Continental Championships for youth and seniors, Women Grand Prix and the FIDE Congress in 1999.

Qatar has participated in twelve Olympiads since 1986 (except in 2004 for religious reasons). Its best achievement was fifty-fifth in 2002. Its best player Al-Modiahki has collected four individual medals.

The country has three Grandmasters and two International Masters and nine titled players.

The best known players are Mohamad Al-Modiahki, Mohammed Al Sayed and Zhu Chen.
