tseshkovsky Russian Grandmaster (1975). European Senior Champion in 2009 and 2010 and vice champion in 2008.
USSR Champion in 1978 (joint with Mikhail Tal) and 1986. Twice Champion of the Russian Federation in 1972 and in 1973. Nine times he played in the USSR Championship Final.

At the FIDE Zonals, he shared first-fourth place in 1975, was the third in 1978, was ninth in 1982, in the Interzonals, he was the fourth in Manila 1976 and eighth at Riga in 1979.

Won or shared first place in Sochi 1981, Bucharest 1974, Leipzig 1975, Dubna 1976, Albena 1977, Malgrat and Costa Bravo 1978, Erevan 1980, Cienfuegos 1981 and Banja Luka 1981, Minsk 1982, Halle 1984, Wijk aan Zee II 1988, Baden Baden 1988, Kuban Summer and Hastings II 2001, Stepanov Memorial 2002 and 2004, Championship of South Region 2004, Agzamov Memorial 2008 and Maikop 2008

A member of the Soviet team at the 1986 Olympiads where he collected a gold team medal.
At his best, he was inclined to a difficult positional struggle with mutual chances. He was also well oriented in tactical complications, differs by uncompromisingness during the struggle.
