uhlmann German Grandmaster (1959). Uhlmann was the Champion of the East Germany 11 times.

His first success was his participation in the East Germany Youth Championship then since 1956, he became the undisputed leader of the national East German team in the Oympiads. In 1964 in Tel Aviv, he won the gold medal at board 1 having scored 15 points out of 18; in the 1966 Olympiad, he won an individual bronze medal with 13 points out of 18.

He participated in four Interzonals, having made the best result in Palma de Mallorca in 1970, where uhlmann_2 he shared the fifth-sixth places with Mark Taimanov and became a Candidate. In 1971, he lost a quarterfinal match to Bent Larsen by 3½-5 ½.

Uhlmann showed brilliant play at numerous tournaments, having won or shared the victory at Kinbaum 1958, Hastings 1958, Sarajevo 1964 equal with Lev Polugaevsky, Havana 1964 together with Vassily Smyslov, Zagreb 1965 with Borislav Ivkov, Hastings 1965-66 equal with Boris Spassky In Berlin 1968 at Lasker Memorial, he shared the victory with David Bronstein; in Hastings 1975-76, he was equal with David Bronstein, then won Halle in 1981, 1982 and 1984 and finally Potsdam in 1985.

A participant in 11 Olympiads between 1956 and 1990, where he collected one individual gold medal in 1964 and one individual bronze medal in 1966.
