American chess master born in Westphalia, Germany but immigrated to the United States when he was 12 years old.
Uedemann won the US Open Championship title twice in 1900 and in 1902. He was the chess editor for the Chicago Tribune.
He developed together with Gringmuth a code adapted for use with telegraphs for cable matches.
Uedemann-Gringmuth’s notation was first used in the telegraphic match between London and St Petersburg in November, 1886.
