In 1994 he lost a Candidates’ match to Gata Kamsky 2½-4½.

Van der Sterren has participated in eight Olympiads from 1982 to 2000 winning a team bronze medal in 1988.

Is presently retiring from chess. Best ELO: 2605 in 1994.
