scotland The oldest federation of the UK. The Scottish Chess Association was founded in 1884 and a member of FIDE since 1924. The first appearance at the Olympiads was in 1933 with fifteenth place. For many decades, McKenzie was the only player of Grandmaster strength, but at the present can easily line up Grandmasters in international competitions. Among them are Motwani, Rowson and McNab.

The Scottish championships are steeped in the history. The first championship was staged in 1884 and, other than during both world wars, the event have been held every year since making it the world’s oldest continuous chess events.
