The Nigerian Chess federation became a member of FIDE in 1975. The national team has participated in 14 Olympiads since 1980. Its best achievement was 66th in 1986. Odion Aikhoje was the only representative to win an individual gold for the best performance at board two in 1998.
The best success for Nigeria chess came at the 2003 (Abuja) and 2007 (Alger) All African Games where the national team collected two team bronze medals.
