The Bangladesh chess federation became a FIDE member in 1979.
The federation has participate to 14 Olympiads since 1982 (its best achievement was 41th in 2004) and has finished 4th at the 1991 Asian Team Championship.

In 2010 Bangladesh was ranked 67th among the countries with 5 IGMs and a total of 26 titled players.
Dhaka, the capital, hosted international events and the United Insurance Championship since 1993. The winners were: Lodhi in 1993; Krasenkov and Hebden in 1995; Thipsay and Plaskett in 1997; Short and Shulman in 1999; Volzhin and Ehlvest in 2001; Sermek in 2002; Dzhumaev, Tiviakov and Rahman in 2003; Rahman in 2004 Nguen Ahn Dung 2008 and Rahman in 2009.
