The Bermuda Chess Association joint FIDE in 1976. The national team has participated to 16 Olympiads since 1976. Its best achievement was 41th in 1976.
International chess events were organized since the late 1980’s. The last winners of the main tournament usually a Round Robin were: 1995 Alexander Lesiege, 1997 Julian Hodgson, 1999 Etienne Bacrot, 2002 Darryl Johannssen, Hikaru Nakamura and Giovanni Vescovi, 2003 Giovanni Vescovi, 2004 Giovanni Vescovi, 2005 Boris Gelfand and Andrei Volokitin, 2007 Nick De Firmian, 2008 Ivanov, 2010 Larry Christiansen. In 1998 a Scheveningen tournament on 10 boards was hosted, America beat Europe 52½-46½ and in 2000 Michael Adams won an exhibition match vs. Seirawan 5-3.

In 2009 Bermuda was ranked 129th among the countries (1951) with a total of 2 titled players.
