The CONFEDERAÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE XADREZ was created in 1927 and joined FIDE in 1928. The national team has participated in 22 Olympiads since 1936 with its best achievement being 14th in 1939.
Brazil hosted many world youth championships but also some top events like the Petropolis Interzonal in 1973 won by Henrique Mecking, Rio de Janeiro in 1979 won by Portisch, Tigran Petrosian and Robert Hubner, Sao Polo in 1978 won by Vassily Smyslov and in 1979 (10) won by Viktor Korchnoi and Ljubojevic, Brasilia (10) in 1981 won by Ljubojevic, Franca Gacia Memorial (9) in 2004 won by Delgado.
In 2010 Brazil was ranked 27th among the countries (2528) with 10 IGMs, 27 IMs and a total of 132 titled players. The known players are Mecking, Sunye Neto, Milos, Vescovi, Leitao and Lima.
