The winners were: 1944 Andor Lilienthal; 1945 Alexander Kontantinopolsky; 1964 Vladimir Antoshin; 1972 Mikhail Tal; 1980 Garry Kasparov; 1983 Nigel Short; 1986 Mikhail Gurevich; 1988 Alexander Huzman; 1997 Alexander Kasheisvili; 2006 Sahriyar Mamedyarov; 2007 Arkadij Naiditsch, 2008 Evgeniy Najer, 2008 (GP) Wang Hue, Vugar Gashimov and Magnus Carlsen, 2010 Vladimir Kramnik and Gata Kamsky (Open), 2011 Sergei Zhigalko.
In 2002 Baku hosted the European U20 championship and in 2008 one tournament of the FIDE Grand Prix.
