berlin The Capital of Germany was the venue of the double-round won by Raoul Capablanca 8½/12 ahead of Aron Nimzowitch 7 and Rudolf Spielmann 6½ in 1928. A busy city from 1979 until 1996 with great tournaments organized such as the Berlin Summer and sometime up to 3 international tournaments per year. In 1979 Vassily Smyslov and Istvan Csom shared the first place, other winners were 1982 Smab Lputian, 1983 Vastimil Hort, 1984 Florin Gheorghiu, 1984 Eric Lobron, Hulak & Lein, 1986 Mikhail Tal, 1987 Gad Rechlis, 1988 Serguey Smagin, 1988 Bogdan Lalic, 1989 Zurab Azmaiparashvili, 1989 Viktor Gavrikov, 1989 Vladimirov, 1990 Bosko Abramovic, 1990 Yuri Balashov & Oleg Romanishin, 1990 Eingorn, 1991 Eingorn & Luck Van Wely, 1992 Yuri Dohoyan, 1993 Sergey Movsesian, 1993 Sergey Movsesian & Henrik Teske, 1995 Hector, 1996 Vladimir Akopian, Sergei Shipov & Zurab Sturua.
The city hosts the headquarters of the European Chess Union and the German Chess Federation secretariat.
