Beautiful Slovenian resort near the border of Austria which staged a few world class tournaments. The first one in 1931 was a triumph for Alexander Alekhine 20½ far ahead of Efim Bogoljubow 15 and Aaron Nimzowitsch 14. In 1959 the city welcomed the participant of the first half of the 4th Candidates’ Tournament and the victory of the 22 years old Mikhail Tal. In 1961 Tal scored another sensational victory despite a first ever lost against Robert Fischer. In 2002 The city greeted the 1,500 participant of the 2002 Chess Olympiad with an usual clean victory for the Russian team for the men and another Chinese triumph in the women’s section. Since 1980 an International Open is organized.
