The Cyprus Chess Association was founded in 1960 when the island became a republic. Kleopas was the first champion in 1962 and the same year Cyprus was admitted as a full member of FIDE with its first participation in an Olympiad. So far its best ranking was 37^th.

In 2010 Cyprus was ranked 101^st among the countries (2123) with 5 titled players.

The last champions were : 2001 Paris Klerides, 2004 Paris Klerides, 2006 Antonis Antoniou, 2007 Julian Baltag, 2008 Paris Klerides, 2009 Paris Klerides, 2010 Antonis Antoniou, 2011 Antonis Antoniou.
