The Canadian Chess Association was founded in 1872 and organized its first Championship the following year. In 1932 the Association was replaced by the Federation which represented all the cities of Canada. One of the Founders of FIDE in 1924, Canada became a full member in 1935 and four years participated in its first Olympiads. The best ranking so far was joint eighth in 1976.
Four major events which were organized in the countries are: The last eight games of the 1894 World Championship between Emmanuel Lasker and Wilheim Steinitz in Montreal, the World Junior at Toronto 1954, the Quarter-final match of World Championship between Robert Fischer and Mark Taimanov at Vancouver in 1971, the Candidates Matches at St. John in 1988 and the Candidate Semi-final match between Arthur Yusupov and Kevin Spraggett in Quebec 1989.
In 2011 Canada was ranked 44th among the countries (2497) with 8 IGMs, 30 IMs and a total of 131 titled players
