The Federacion Ecuatoriana de Ajedrez is affiliated to FIDE since 1939.
The country participated for the first time in the 1939 Olympiad of Buenos Aires then after a break of 21 years the team returns for 16 more participations. It best achievement was 21^st in 1939, however the national team took the bronze at the 2003 Panamercan Team Championship.
The 2010 national champion is Mieles Palau Daniel.
Franco Carlo Matamoros is the only Grandmaster and the best national player. Martha Fierro Baquero, the best female player who is International Master and Women Grandmaster, was crowned American Women Champion in 2009.
In 2010 Ecuador was ranked 64^th among the countries (2391) with 1 IGMs, 8 IMs and a total of 35 titled players.
