The Egyptian Chess Federation became a member of FIDE in 1950 but its first international competition was the Olympiad in 1980. Since then Egypt has won four times the African Team Championships and the African games in 2007 and 2011. As continental champion, the national team has participated to the 2010 and 2011 World Team Championships in which it finished 9th and 10th.
The winners of the last national championships were: 2007 Ahmed Adly, 2008 Mohamed Erzat, 2009 Ahmed Adly and 2010 Fouad El Taher.
The 2007 former World Junior Champion Ahmed Adly, the 2009 African Champion Bassem Amin and the 2009 Arab Champion Essam El Gindy are the Grandmasters.
In 2011 Egypt was ranked 45th among the countries (2452) with 3 IGMs, 25 IMs and a total of 47 titled players.
