The Federacion Salvadorena de Ajedrez became a member of FIDE in 1966, however the national team won the Counter-Olympiad of Tripoli in 1976. The country has participated to 10 Olympiads since 1986. The best achievement was 54^th in 1986. In 2010 the federation lists 3 IMs and 3 WIMs. The best players are the IMs Hector Leyva, the national champion 2008 and 2009, and Arias Lemmys. El Salvador has organized the Women Continental Championship in 2008.
